Holmfirth Duck race goes swimmingly

The event featured a fair at Sands Recreation Ground including charity stalls, fairground rides, clothes, crafts and antiques, together with food and face painting.

Wayne Goodman, this year’s Duck Race chairman, said: “We try to make it bigger and better each year.

“I’m not sure where the idea came from but it’s good to come up with a fundraising event that’s fun – and it works. It’s like the old game pooh sticks.

Huddersfield Pendragon secretary Alec Jackson added: “The last two years it was a washout and we nearly had to cancel, but this year it’s been great.”

Toni Woodhead, her children Alex, 10, and Elizabeth, 7, and partner Karl Beaumont, 35, are Duck Race regulars.

Toni, 31, of Linthwaite, said: “It’s a good family day out. I’m just hoping our duck doesn’t get stuck. I’ve been virtually every year and thankfully the weather’s good this time.”
