SHINE: Deighton girl chosen as young ambassador for The Prince’s Trust
“I could be in a room full of people but I would feel utterly alone and anxious,’’ she said.
“I was distrusting of everyone and had no idea what the future held for me and Jamaal.”
Nicole felt people had written her off, assuming that she would bring her son up on benefits.
It was then that she joined The Prince’s Trust 12 week programme.
While she was on the programme Nicole went for an interview at Kirklees College despite previously thinking that she would never return to education.
She secured a place on a BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care which she will complete next week.
She is expected to get a distinction and wants to go on to study Clinical Psychology at university.
This month Nicole will complete an Advanced Public Speaking course with The Prince’s Trust in Manchester.
She said: “I am delighted to represent young people as a Young Ambassador.
“I feel like I have actually got somewhere in life.
“ Perhaps I can help others not to make the same mistake I did by dropping out of school.
“Young people do get a bad name sometimes.
“I think it’s important to show people that it is unfair to judge a young person – because how do you know that with some support and a second chance, their future won’t turn out to be the same as yours?”
