Future of Huddersfield Tourist Information Centre to be decided

CAMPAIGNERS are continuing the fight to have a visitor centre in Huddersfield.
Kirklees Council’s cabinet will today decide if the tourist information centre on Albion Street will close.
Council officials want to shut the office to save money. Visitor information would be provided at Huddersfield Library.
But campaigners will lobby the cabinet to provide a new dedicated tourist office in the town centre.
Stan Solomons said: “There isn’t the space in the library to offer the same visitor services as there is currently at the tourist office. Also the library is not user-friendly for people in wheelchairs.
“We need a tourist office at street level and I think Neaverson’s in Byram Arcade would be a good place.”
But the council’s cabinet member for regeneration Clr Christine Stanfield dismissed the idea.
The Lindley Lib Dem said: “There are lots and lots of things we would all wish for in a perfect world, but we need to cut down our bottom line. We can’t do that if we pay lots of rent for a prime site elsewhere.”
