Marsden pub The Swan has sound system seized after noise nuisance

Landlady Mandy Hester was served with a noise Abatement Notice on June 29, but this was breached by a disco on July 2.

Ms Hester will be interviewed by environmental services next week to find out if she will face prosecution.

She said she only brought in music to turn the pub’s fortunes around.

“This pub was quiet when I took over last October and I got it up and running.”

Resident David Carter lives next door to the pub and has no issues with noise.

“Mandy’s turned this pub around, it used to be dead. I can’t hear anything to complain about. The main problem is people making noise in the street, coming down from other pubs. She can’t do anything about that.”

Clr David Sheard, Kirklees Council cabinet member for Environment, said: “Throughout the investigation environmental health officers have liaised with the Licensing Service and with pub owners Thwaites Brewery to try and resolve the problem amicably and without having to prosecute.

“However, we have been left with no alternative.

“Public houses have a responsibility to consider their neighbours and should not be playing loud music at anytime of the day or night if it is likely to cause upset and distress to those living nearby.”
