Fire at John Cotton truck yard
The fire started in one of the units parked up in the transport compound and quickly spread to the 16 trailer units containing the mattress wadding.
The first crews on the scene were from Cleckheaton and Batley and they quickly arranged for other crews to help them with the huge fire-fighting operation.
Other crews were called to the yard from Huddersfield, Elland, Dewsbury and Bradford.
They used four large jets and water from an aerial appliance to tackle the blaze as flames spread from one unit to the next.
The blazing mattress material sent clouds of dense black smoke pouring into the sky.
Police closed roads around the compound as the firefighters worked.
The crews remained at the compound for more than five hours.
The cause of the blaze is now being investigated by a team from the West Yorkshire fire investigation section.
A spokesman for the firm said the trailer units were stored in the rented compound and virtually all were filled with the wadding material.
“We manufacture millions and millions of metres of the material every year and hopefully we can catch up with production very quickly.
“All of the trailer units were destroyed in the fire and obviously there will be a considerable cost, although it is too early to say how much”.
