Huddersfield company Marshalls fined after worker loses fingertip

The court heard Marshalls had been prosecuted in 2004 after a supervisor at a plant in Bury, Lancashire, lost a toe in an industrial accident.

Another concrete worker lost a middle finger at West Lane Works in May 2005 but the case was never taken to court.

Following the hearing Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Andrew Denison said: “Jeffrey Sampson is fortunate that he only lost the end of his finger in this incident...

“It’s disappointing to see a respected manufacturer like Marshalls in court, but the prosecution serves as a reminder that we will call to account employers who fail in their duties to protect their employees safety.”

A spokesman from Marshalls Mono said: “The safety of our employees continues to be a key priority for our business. Since the accident seven months ago, all machines and processes at West Lane Works have been reviewed, and improvements made to our systems and operational activities, with Marshalls working alongside the HSE.”
