Residents to have their say on proposed Tesco in Holmfirth

RESIDENTS can have their say on a proposed new supermarket.

Kirklees Council has begun public consultation on the planned Tesco store in Holmfirth.

The retail giant wants to build on the former Midlothian Garage site off New Mill Road.

Tesco hopes the new store, which would have 3,156 sq m of retail space, would create 363 full and part-time jobs. The 2.4 hectare site would include a petrol station.

The supermarket would have room for 383 cars, including 20 disabled spaces.

Tesco hopes the store would be the greenest supermarket in Yorkshire, with features including rainwater recycling to provide water for plants and toilet flushing.

Kirklees is collecting people’s opinions on the plan until August 9. Huddersfield Planning Subcommittee will then decide if the supermarket should go ahead.

Holmfirth greengrocer Andrew Bray criticised Kirklees for consulting on the plans during the summer. He said: “I think it’s absolutely disgusting that these plans have been put out just as the schools break up and people go on holiday.”
