Tesco and Asda head for “Store Wars” in Huddersfield

STORE wars erupted in Huddersfield today.

Asda confirmed they had formally submitted their plans for a £40m superstore on the town’s ring road.

And Tesco confirmed detailed plans for their planned multi-million store in Southgate will go on show tomorrow.

The two sites are only half a mile apart.

Members of the public are being invited to view the latest plans for a new Tesco ‘eco store’ which is being proposed for the site of the existing sports centre and forms part of the £120m regeneration of Southgate.

The exhibition is being held at the existing Tesco store on Viaduct Street tomorrow and Saturday.

A planning application will be submitted in late summer.

Meanwhile, Asda has formally submitted a planning application to Kirklees Council for a planned new store on the current Broadbent factory site between Queensgate and Milford Street.

The proposal, for a 49,000 sq ft sales area store with a 560 space car park, will cost £40m.

An Asda spokesman said it would regenerate a key central site, bordered by Queensgate, Queen Street South, Milford Street and Chapel Hill.

In total, the scheme will create up to 450 new full and part time jobs for local people.

A Tesco spokesman said: “The proposed new 74,000 sq ft store will help to deliver a huge range of new amenities for the area on the current Tesco site, including high quality living spaces, more shops and restaurants, a new hotel, office space and car parking.

“The proposed Tesco store would also create around 250 permanent new jobs and have the environment at the heart of the store’s design by using state-of-the-art technologies to reduce its carbon footprint.

“A special recruitment scheme would target the long-term unemployed, with help and advice given on making the application and interview skills. Recruits who complete a six week training programme would be guaranteed a job”.

The retail giant has been consulting and making changes to the proposed design of the store for the past two years, liaising with Kirklees Council.
