St George's Square lighting plan revealed
Aug 20 2009 By Barry Gibson
Kirklees has applied for planning permission to install 23 lights on the George Hotel, 48 on Lion Chambers, 44 on the station and 20 on Britannia Buildings.
Mr Drury is hopeful the lights can be installed within a few months. He said: "We’re hoping to get them up by Christmas. It would be nice to get them up sooner but we have to be realistic.
"These are important historic buildings so the matter will need to be referenced to English Heritage."
Most of the lights would point upwards to illuminate historic features of the buildings such as eaves and pillars.
The lights would come on at dusk. They would be dimmed at 1am and turned off at dawn.
Kirklees plans to use three types of lights, ranging in diameter between 45 and 65 millimetres. The lights would be coloured to match the stone of the buildings.
Mr Drury said: "These are very small, high-quality lights which will have low energy use."
Mr Drury declined to discuss the cost of the lights yesterday.
