“It sounds like we’ve been very popular. We’ve done a lot of work to raise our profile and that has put us at the top of people’s lists.”
The university has only 150 clearing spaces this year because of increased demand.
Ms Grainger said: “Competition for places has been fierce this year and courses like physiotherapy and pharmacy have been particularly popular.”
The university is holding a special open day today for young people hoping to get clearing spaces.
Ms Grainger said: “The young people may not have been here before so they will want to come and check us out. Tutors will be there to talk to them about the courses and the young people can also have a tour of the campus and the accommodation at Storthes Hall.
“It’s going to be a busy day.”
Demand for clearing places has been high nationally, with a quarter of all spaces snapped up by last night.
University admissions service UCAS said 5,205 of the 22,000 spots have been filled. Some 141,699 young people qualified for clearing this year – up more than 26,000 on last year.
