Filming begins on 31st series of Summer Wine

“It’s going to appeal to the same people. Some people like it because it’s juvenile, but that’s the idea.

“There’s no abiding plot, just funny situations and stupidity.

“There’s a love interest between Howard (Robert Fyfe) and Marina (Jean Fergusson).

“It’s just about how ridiculous you can get. It’s like a panto – you can do anything.”

Beeny added: “I’m the youngest. At 68, I’m the lad of the group! I really enjoy making it. It’s like a family.”

Actors including Russ Abbot (Hobbo), Burt Kwouk (Entwistle) and June Whitfield (Nelly) gathered at the Central Lodge Hotel in Beast Market, Huddersfield, this week to celebrate the hotel’s 10th anniversary with hotel owners, brothers Johnny and Joe Marsden.

The hotel, and its predecessor The Huddersfield Hotel, owned by the Marsden brothers, has been a home since 1984 for Summer Wine actors and actresses while they recorded their outdoor scenes in Holmfirth.

Joe said: “When you think they work in 13-week blocks, that’s a quarter of the year over 20 years. So Peter Sallis (who played Norman Clegg) was staying five years. He’s almost lived with us. We were and still are friends with him.

Joe, who has himself had roles in the series between 1987 and 2001 added: “Last of the Summer Wine has become part of the hotel’s heritage and they’re really nice people.”
