£22,000 bill for St George’s Square lights revealed

NEW lights for historic buildings in Huddersfield will cost more than £22,000.

Kirklees Council revealed the price of the lights for buildings around St George’s Square yesterday.

Last week the council officials applied for planning permission to illuminate Huddersfield Railway Station, the George Hotel, Britannia Buildings and Lion Chambers.

Most of the lights would point upwards to show off the historic features of the listed buildings.

Kirklees revealed that the lights would cost £22,790 to buy and less than £200 a year to run.

Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Peter McBride believes the lights are worth the expense.

The Dalton Labour man said: “The new lighting scheme will provide remarkable value for money when you consider the impact it will have.

“All around the world you can see famous buildings illuminated at night, showing off their beauty and the esteem in which they are held and I’m delighted we are doing the same in Huddersfield.

“We should be proud of our architecture as it reflects the town’s history, but the protection and enhancement of these buildings is also important to our future.
