Huddersfield fans share memories of Wembley as Challenge Cup Final approaches

Now he is relishing a return to the capital for the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final, having been there in 1962 for the defeat by Wakefield Trinity.

Mr Kaye, of Edgemoor Road, Honley, said: “I have followed the club for 60 years through the high points and the low points.

“We lost in 1962, but it was a memorable day. I remember standing right at the back of the crowd.

“I’m now a member of the 1895 Club at the Giants and we are going down on Friday to make it a real Wembley weekend.

“I think we have a pretty good chance, although I don’t think there will be a lot in it.

“We have to take our chances”.

Austin Holroyd, of Almondbury, recalled the 1953 final against St Helen’s as his best sporting memory.

“We didn’t want to be late so we set off by car at 4am. The A1 was quiet so we parked in front of Buckingham Palace by 8.30am.

“It was a real ding-dong match and it was a Huddersfield lad, Peter Ramsden, celebrating his 19th birthday who stole the show, in spite of playing with a broken nose.

“By the time we got halfway home to the Saracen’s Head at Towcester, we were ready for our well-earned dinner.

“You could say it had been a tiring day – and we’d only been spectators.

“The following week, we lost 42-2 at St Helens in the top four play-off? But who cared?”
