THE Royal British Legion has reversed a decision to reject a BNP member’s charity fundraiser.

Rachel Firth, 36, is planning to spend 24 hours inside a cardboard box this weekend to highlight the plight of ex-service personnel who are forced to sleep rough.

She intended to raise money for the legion, which supports ex-service personnel.

But, as reported this month, the charity said it would not accept the Skelmanthorpe mum-of-two’s money because she planned to give half the money to the far-right British National Party as well.

Now the legion has changed its position.

A spokesman said the charity would accept her money.

He said the organisation had originally thought the donation was being made on a political basis – and the money could therefore not be accepted.

But he added: “The situation is different with Rachel.

“She is an individual raising funds for her favoured causes and wants to split those funds between the causes.

“We have no problem with this.

“I have spoken to Rachel and explained the confusion.

“She understands and is content.

“We wish her well in her fundraising this weekend and are hoping it doesn’t rain on the cardboard box.”
