Greenhead Park restoration plans move on to war memorial

RESTORATION work on Greenhead Park is progressing with work starting on the war memorial.

The £5million park improvements are now focusing on the phase near to the war memorial with the replacement of replica planters around the surrounding wall.

The new cast iron planters are replicas of the originals and work on the area will be complete in time for Remembrance Sunday events.

The first of the 21 new planters will be fixed to the stone wall around the memorial, marking the start of the transformation of that part of the park.

Peter Broadbent, from the Huddersfield War Memorial Trust, is delighted at the progress being made.

He said: “The improved setting to the memorial which will be created by the new planters and works to the stone walls, together with the cleaning of the memorial itself, demonstrates the importance this war memorial has, not only in Greenhead Park but also in the life of Huddersfield.”

Other improvements in the area around the war memorial include repairing and levelling all the steps, resurfacing the footpaths with tarmac and self-binding gravel as well as removing the anti-graffiti paint from the memorial itself.

All this work is scheduled to be completed in time for Remembrance Sunday which will take place on November 8.

Clr Mohan Sokhal, of the Greenhead ward, said: “This is a wonderful project which has been in development for many years and finally we are starting to see the benefits being realised.

“I share the enthusiasm of the Huddersfield War Memorial Trustees and ask that we all help look after and respect the war memorial and what it stands for.”
