Kali Mountford and Mike Wood in dark over expenses
Oct 15 2009 By Emma Davison
AS two local MPs awaited letters about their expenses, an MP representing part of Huddersfield has revealed she was ordered to pay back some of hers.
But Wakefield Labour MP Mary Creagh – whose constituency includes Kirkburton and Denby Dale – said this was due to an ‘admin error’ and welcomed the review by Sir Thomas Legg.
Mrs Creagh was told she had to repay only a small overpayment.
She said: “This process has revealed that in January 2009, due to an admin error, I was reimbursed twice for one month’s additional costs allowance.
“This resulted in an overpayment to me of £1,001 which I have now repaid.
“I welcome the Legg audit of MPs’ allowances.”
Sir Thomas has been reviewing all MPs’ expenses claims over the last five years following the string of scandals from earlier this year.
MPs began receiving their letters on Tuesday with some asked to pay back thousands.
Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman and Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik, were not asked to pay back any money.
Meanwhile some MPs said they were still waiting to hear whether they had been cleared over their expenses claims.
