Huddersfield cop duo’s dangerous driving trial delayed again
Oct 27 2009 by Nick Lavigueur, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
THE trial of two Huddersfield policeman charged with dangerous driving has been delayed again.
Sergeants Andrew Watson, from Linthwaite, and John Shelton Newsham, from Ainley Top, are alleged to have reversed down the M606 near its junction with the M62 at Chain Bar on June 29, 2008.
The duo, who were in separate vehicles, have also been charged with dangerous driving.
They have both pleaded not guilty.
Yesterday 16 months after the alleged offences, the two men appeared at Dewsbury Magistrates Court expecting to face trial.
But magistrates were forced to adjourn the case until January 6 next year after the prosecution said there were still legal arguments to be resolved.
It is thought lawyers are waiting for the conclusion of a crown court case of one of the other motorists charged with dangerous driving on the M606 that same day before they decide whether to proceed.
The two officers were among several people charged for reversing on the Bradford motorway after a collision on the southbound carriageway forced its closure.
CCTV footage of the day allegedly shows a number of drivers reversing down the hard shoulder and the carriageway.
