FIREFIGHTERS had to cut a woman out of her car after she was hurt in a crash.

More than a dozen firefighters in three fire engines from Huddersfield, Elland and Slaithwaite, were dispatched to the incident outside the Examiner’s offices on Queen Street South yesterday morning.

The woman, believed to be in her early 20s, was driving a Fiat Punto that was in collision with a Jaguar XJ shortly after 10.30am.

It is thought she had driven out of Milford Street onto Queen Street South and collided with the Jaguar as it travelled towards the ring road from Firth Street.

As passers-by looked on, the fire crews took out the windows of the Punto and then cut the roof off. The operation lasted about an hour.

Watch manager Andy Blackburn, who led the rescue, said: “At first we were going to try to bring her out through the door, but acting on the advice of the paramedics we decided to take the roof off because of concerns about her injuries.”

Heavy cutting gear was used to remove the roof.

The woman was then put on a board and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary suffering from suspectedpelvic injuries.

The driver of the Jaguar, a man thought to be in his 30s, was not hurt.

Police closed the road while the incident was dealt with.

Recovery trucks arrived to remove both cars at about midday.
