Gruesome gathering for third Huddersfield Zombie Slouch
Nov 2 2009 By Sam Casey
THERE was something dead strange going on in Huddersfield town centre on Saturday.
Shoppers were stopped in their tracks as crowds of zombies staggered their way around town as part of an annual charity event.
About 150 people dressed up as the undead for the third Huddersfield Zombie Slouch.
The ghoulish gathering of zombie builders, doctors and nurses, brides and babies, clowns, soldiers and even a lollipop man – complete with severed foot – were raising money for Women’s Aid domestic violence charity.
They came together in St George’s Square before slowly making their way from John William Street and New Street, down Ramsden Street past Huddersfield Town Hall, along Victoria Lane and up King Street.
Shoppers gawped, giggled and in some cases shrieked as the macabre mass of misfits passed by.
Diners in coffee shops and fast food restaurants were given a fright by zombies pressing up against windows.
The event, popular, in North America, was the brainchild of Simon Kelling, whose day job is as a museums and outreach officer for Kirklees Council.
Having started in 2007, it has grown in popularity.
