Sir Bernard Ingham not impressed by St George’s Square
Nov 6 2009 by Sam Casey, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
He said he was not a great fan of current Tory leader, David Cameron, but believes it is time for a change from the Labour Government.
“Nobody knows how they will perform in the job, but Cameron is our only hope, because we can’t leave affairs in the hands of this discredited bunch,” he said.
“I don’t have much in common with Cameron’s set, but I think he has something about him. It doesn’t take much to have something about you in today’s politics but I think he could surprise us.”
He said the current prime minister was clueless – and no amount of spin doctoring could mask that fact.
“Gordon Brown is useless, a total political dunce,” he said.
“You’ve either got it or you haven’t. If you haven’t got it, it doesn’t matter how many PR people you have, you will fail. And Brown hasn’t got it.
“I didn’t craft anything with Margaret Thatcher, I just advised her and she did the rest.”
But he is not keen to see a repeat of the 18-year spell of continuous control the Conservatives enjoyed between 1979 and 1997.
He said: “In many ways I think 12 or 13 years of one party is not right for our democracy to flourish. We need strong opposition, not opposition that are ground into the dust for three or four elections in a row.”
