Huddersfield's red telephone boxes saved
Nov 12 2009 by Sam Casey, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
THE futures of 13 iconic red telephone boxes have been secured.
Members of Kirklees Council’s Cabinet yesterday committed £13,000 to protect the kiosks, all in conservation areas or near listed buildings, for three years.
The move will see town councils buy the phone boxes from BT for £1 each. They will be given £1,000 to maintain each box for three years. They will be disconnected from the phone network and put to new uses.
The boxes are at: Lower Cumberworth; Wakefield Road, Denby Dale; Cumberworth Road, Skelmanthorpe; outside Hepworth Post Office; Towngate, Upperthong; Hall Ing Lane, Honley; Farwell Lane, New Mill; Oldfield, Honley; Riley Lane, Kirkburton; near Black Bull Hotel, Penistone Road, Shepley; junction of Wilshaw Road and Lower Greave Road, Meltham; The Slades, Helme, Meltham; and Jackroyd Lane, Mirfield.
