Beer festival success as barrels drunk dry at Colne Valley Lions’ Moonraker beer festival

A CHARITY beer festival was so successful every barrel was drained dry.

Revellers packed Slaithwaite Conservative Club for drinking and entertainment at the Colne Valley Lions’ ninth Moonraker beer festival.

John Daker, who has been a member of the Lions for 32 years, said the beer barrels were drank dry over the three day festival.

He said a good time was had by all while a “handsome” sum was raised for charity.

One of the barrels had been bought by Wellhouse man David Haigh and his colleagues who are RAF firefighters now based out in Afghanistan.

Mr Daker, 70, of Golcar, said: “People came from all over the north of England.

“It’s a really good and popular local event.

“Let’s just say there was not a drop of beer left at the end.”

The former fishmonger added: “The Lions would like to say great big thank you to the local companies who sponsor us year after year.

“It’s our ninth event this year and it went very well.”

The money raised – which hasn’t yet been counted up – will go towards the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team and a range of Lions charities.

The Lions are hoping they will smash last year’s £5,000 total which went to the urology department at Huddersfield.

In 2007 the group raised £4,500 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
