Wet, wet, wet and more rain to come!

HUDDERSFIELD is all set to be battered by gales for the rest of this week.

The grim news comes as the Environment Agency issued flood warnings for the Fenay Beck area and also warned that the Colne and Holme rivers were becoming badly swollen as millions of gallons of rainwater poured into them.

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday evening boosted already larger than normal monthly totals.

And Salendine Nook meteorologist Paul Stephens says there’s more on the way.

Mr Stephens said 29mm of rain – more than an inch – had fallen on Tuesday evening, boosting the November total already to 100mm (four inches). This is just over halfway through the month and is already 25% up on normal figures.

He said: “The ground is really sodden and the water table already near the surface, so I would warn people to watch out for localised flooding.”

He said tropical air travelling north, coupled with milder than average temperatures, was causing heavy rainfall which would continue well into the weekend.

A deep low on Saturday evening will bring more wet and windy weather with gusts up to 50 miles per hour and another inch of rain falling.

The weather will remain wet and unsettled over the next five to 10 days but Mr Stephens said he was expecting the unusually mild temperatures to fall quite dramatically by the end of next week with the region possibly seeing its first sleet showers.
