Beer tax on the agenda for new CAMRA chairman
So why is real ale, alongside wine, the only growing sector among alcoholic drinks?
Michael said: “It’s the variety of taste and strength. It’s the variety and range that real ale offers. Many pubs and clubs have a huge selection available. And besides, I don’t like fizz!”
And how does Michael feel about his new role as champion of Huddersfield’s real ale makers?
He quips: “It’s a bit daunting, really, but the prospect is exciting.
“I retired at the end of September and without that I wouldn’t be able to put the commitment and effort to drive this forward. I’m busy finding out what I’ve to do as chairman.
“Whatever I can do, I will with a particular view to reducing tax on the pubs. I’m against the cheap cans sold at the supermarkets. I want to promote responsible drinking in pubs so they can be the centre of communities again.”
The Will’s O’Nats at Meltham won the summer season award from CAMRA for the best quality of beers in the town.
