Meltham man David Robinson praised over 999 Meltham fire call

Mr Robinson, 54, of Huddersfield Road, Meltham, had left his home in the early hours to walk to his car, parked off Clarke Lane.

He said: “It was lucky it was there. Sometimes I park close to my home but last night I left it outside my mother’s home.

“There was a really strong smell of burning but I could see nothing. I could also hear an alarm going but could not tell where it was coming from.

“I’m just so glad I decided to call 999. I would hate to think what could have happened had I not made the call”.

He met the two men late yesterday and said: “They were very grateful and thanked me.

“I’m just glad I was able to help”.

Fire crews from Meltham and Marsden were originally sent to Carlisle Street, which is where the burning smell was strongest, but then found the fire in adjoining Clarke Lane.

Firefighters used a hose reel to put out the blaze which started in a mobility scooter, parked alongside a car in the garage.

Mr Gant, of Meltham Fire Station, said: “There were smoke detectors in the house but the two men slept through them.

“I would like to thank Mr Robinson for his efforts”.
