Kirklees Council staff dig deep to help soldiers in Afghanistan

Warrant Officer McConnell, who works at the Army Careers Information Office in Kirkgate, was joined by four members of the Yorkshire Regiment, including Sgt Craig Campbell.

Sgt Campbell has completed two tours of Afghanistan.

He said: “We received packages like this when I was out there and it was good for morale.

“When we’re out recruiting, people always ask us for an address to send things to the troops.

“The public support for the troops is really good in Yorkshire.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Walter’s thoughts are turning to another Christmas without her son.

She said: “It’s a relief when I get a phone call from him saying he’s OK. He says it’s really cold out there and the work is fast and furious.

“He’s missed Christmas before when he was on tour in Iraq. I always celebrate Christmas Day when he gets back.

“We’ll get the family together and we’ll have Christmas with hats and crackers when he gets back in April.”
