Thousands flock to Huddersfield's Festival of Light - video and picture gallery

FIREWORKS and thousands of cheers ended this year’s spectacular Festival of Light last night.

The show, which featured a series of street artists parading through the town centre, drew an estimated crowd of up to 5,000.

French performers Transe Express took to the streets and air for the show – the first held at St George’s Square since its £4million revamp.

The spectacular procession featured acrobatics, opera, rock music and fireworks.

And this year’s performance featured an aerial show, with some of the artists performing more than 30m above the crowd, suspended from a crane in front of the Railway Station.

And families from throughout the town and further afield lined the streets and packed the square for the extravaganza.

For Elaine Curran of Honley, it was the first Festival of Light event she had attended.

She was there with sons Thomas, 11, a pupil at Honley High School, and Joseph, nine, of Honley Junior School.

Elaine said: "Everyone said how great last year’s was so we thought we’d come along and see what it’s all about."

Tina Rampling, 34, of Lindley, was there with her two children Leigh, five, and Summer, three.

Tina, a nurse, said: "It was fantastic, the children were amazed looking at the acrobats in the air.

"It was amazing and a little scary too but great fun."

The show started with a chaotic street procession along New Street.

Festival-goers mixed with the drummers and artists as they paraded along with the lights and sparklers following them.

Violinists played music while the voices of the artists could be heard over the loud speakers.
