Tyres nuisance man Kyriacos Kyriacou spared jail sentence

A MAN who illegally stored thousands of used tyres has been spared jail.

Kyriacos Kyriacou was handed a six-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, at Bradford crown court yesterday after admitting illegally storing about 6,000 tyres on land next to the river Holme at Honley.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall agreed to spare Kyriacou prison after he removed the majority of tyres at his own expense.

But Kyriacou, 44, of Shelley Lane, Kirkburton, was warned he will face a further prosecution and almost certain jail if he fails to clear the site of the remaining tyres – about 1,500 – within six weeks.

He must also pay £5,500 court costs.

In November 2007 Kyriacou was fined £5,000 after admitting illegally storing up to 15,000 tyres on the site off Huddersfield Road.

He failed to clear the site and was again convicted of the same offence in April.

In mitigation, the court heard Kyriacou had fallen into ‘spectacular levels of debt’ and had his home electricity supply cut off for non-payment.

Passing sentence, Judge Durham Hall said Kyriacou’s “attitude left much to be desired” but accepted he had made ‘expensive efforts’ to dispose of the tyres.

The judge added: “Part of your business has brought you into serious conflict with the authorities in disposing of controlled waste on land without a licence and led to a £5,000 fine at this court on November 12, 2007.
