A POLICEMAN and former Mr Gay UK has been suspended from his job after being arrested on suspicion of a sex offence, the Examiner can reveal.

Huddersfield Pc Mark Carter was relieved of his duties after an alleged incident during a night out in Leeds last weekend.

It is understood Pc Carter had been partying with colleagues when he was arrested.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police arrested a 27-year-old man at a hotel in Leeds on suspicion of committing a serious sexual offence, on Saturday, December 19.

“Enquiries are ongoing and the man has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

“The man has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Pc Carter, who came out in 2005, is a response officer in Huddersfield, dealing with 999 calls.

He has been with West Yorkshire Police for more than four years after graduating from Derby University with a sports science degree.

He won the Mr Gay UK title in 2006 and was runner-up in the European version of the competition the following year.

He has been a high-profile spokesman on gay rights issues and homophobic crime.
