St Peter’s Building demolition plan is shelved

PLANS to demolish and redevelop one of Huddersfield’s most prominent properties have been put on ice.

Manchester-based developers Artisan had applied to knock down the St Peter’s buildings on Lord Street opposite The Media Centre in 2007.

But now the proposals have been shelved.

Artisan intended on building a nine-storey mixed use development of 68 flats and 40,000 sq ft of commercial space.

The decaying buildings once housed Huddersfield Polytechnic students and later drama and media studies students from the University of Huddersfield.

News of the shelved development is the latest in a series of blows for plans for the town centre.

The council’s much-heralded multi-million pound Queensgate plans have been put on ice, and development of the imposing St George’s Warehouse close to the railway station has slowed.

Elsewhere, big plans for two sites off Leeds Road – intended for retail use – have also been delayed by the recession.
