Mr Thewlis has travelled up to North East to conduct the club's own enquiry into the circumstances.
He added: "No further comment will be made by the club or any of its staff, players or coaches at this stage."
Coach Nathan Brown said the team would train today and stay on as planned.
Northumbria Police said: "We can confirm that a 22-year-old woman has made an allegation of rape relating to an incident in Gosforth. Six men have been arrested and are helping with inquiries."
