‘Gas’ man cons OAP couple in Birchencliffe

AN ELDERLY couple were conned by a bogus gasman.
He told the 79-year-old woman he was investigating gas problems at their home in Briarlyn Road. at around 8am yesterday.
He went upstairs and ordered her 85-year-old husband, who was in bed, to go downstairs.
The thief then stole cash and left.
He was black, aged 20 to 30, about 5ft 10ins tall and of medium build. He was wearing dark clothing and had a local accent.
Det Con Dave Kinghorn, of Huddersfield CID, said: “Gas and water engineers never turn up without calling first.
“Always check the identification of any strangers calling and if you have elderly neighbours keep an eye on who is visiting them.”
