ITN news reader Nina Hossain meets journalism students at Huddersfield University
The mother-of-two said: “Individual parts of huge stories like that can be very moving – the plight of humanity is amazing.
“I did a lot of news over the weekend and the pictures were horrific. But four days on, there are those amazing stories where people are still being brought out from the rubble.
“So you see both sides.”
Nina’s father was Dr Tabarek Hossain , originally from Bangladesh, who moved to Britain in the 1960s.
The psychiatrist specialised in alcoholism and set up the Kirklees Alcohol Advisory Service in 1973 and was the founder and president of Concern For Mental Health in West Yorkshire.
Her mother, Pamela was a nurse from Nottingham.
Nina said journalism had changed dramatically since she first started out in her 20s.
She said: “I’m very fearful for the future of journalism – especially investigative journalism.
“But there will always be a place for local news, radio and TV alongside national news, radio and TV.
“Journalists are here to question things and report what is going on out there because people need to know.
“Whether it’s things that are happening down the road in Huddersfield or across the country nationally.
“We can’t leave it to the politicians – it is the journalist’s duty to inform the public.”
