Rape inquiry goes on as Huddersfield Giants return home

He said: “I have already confirmed that six of our players were detained by Northumbria police investigating a serious allegation.

“All have been bailed while the police continue to conduct their inquiries.

“The club appreciate that the police have a duty to thoroughly investigate all allegations of this nature.

“We will assist them in any way requested.

“The police will now gather the facts and reach their conclusions.

“Any speculation is frivolous and risks damaging the reputation of innocent parties.

“So the full Giants squad will continue to train in Newcastle.

“Once the investigation has been concluded the club will make a further statement.

“Until then no further comment will be made by any of our players or staff in relation to this matter.”

The allegation is not the first controversy to hit the Giants in recent years.

In January 2007, under former coach Jon Sharp’s regime, their new signing Ryan Hudson was arrested in Portugal after a drunken incident on a pre-season training camp.

He was charged with damaging three cars and assaulting a police officer, but the charges were later dropped.

At the end of last season prop Keith Mason and hooker Scott Moore were banned for two games after missing training while partying with Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke.

They went boozing with The Wrestler star at the GQ Awards after meeting him at Stringfellows nightclub on the night of the Challenge Cup Final defeat to Warrington Wolves in August.
