CANALS will suffer from a Government funding cut, a councillor warned last night.
Clr Ann Denham is concerned at plans to reduce British Waterways’ budget by 17% next year – a cut of £9.6m.
The Almondbury Lib Dem said: “British Waterways is already underfunded by £30m a year with a backlog of £200m in existing maintenance requirements.
“The Government’s decision to reduce funding to an already underfunded organisation signals trouble ahead for local waterways like Huddersfield Narrow Canal”
“Next year is the 200th anniversary of Huddersfield Narrow Canal. We must make sure that canal is functioning well at that time so that we can make the most of this momentous occasion.”
