Huddersfield Railway Station in Yorkshire’s Top 10 buildings
Jan 25 2010 Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TWO local buildings have beenlisted in an architectural top ten for Yorkshire.
Huddersfield-based Above and Beyond Architecture Ltd conducted a survey to discover the region’s most iconic building.
York Minster claimed the top spot with its Gothic medieval structure with Leeds’ historic Corn Exchange coming in at second.
However Huddersfield Railway Station and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at Bretton have both been listed in the top ten, with the Sculpture Park achieving third place in the rankings.
The Railway Train Station is tenth in the ratings.
Designed by architect James Pigott Pritchett and built during the years 1846-50, the railway station is recognised for its classical style.
The columns and entrance are representative of architecture from ancient Greece, the term for the entrance of the structure is portico.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park is on the other end of the spectrum in architectural terms.
Described as “ultra modern” by Above and Beyond, the Sculpture Park is based on a landscape which was created over 200 years ago. However, the park centre was finished in 2004 which is the main building.
Andrew Stoddart, managing director of Above and Beyond, said: “This backs the upward trend that we have noticed in the redevelopment of listed buildings in the region with people keen to see these once great landmarks restored to their former glory.
“We as a practice have been involved in regeneration and we are delighted buildings like the Minster and the Corn Exchange have been recognised”.
Above & Beyond are celebrating their 10th anniversary and recently moved into new premises – ironically, the rejuvenated Folly Hall Mills in Huddersfield.
