Mystery of giant chunk of ice from sky in Holmfirth - picture

A HUGE chunk of ice narrowly missed a Holmfirth man when it plunged from the sky.

Now the mystery is: What caused the near-miss for Sam Cappelman?

Sam, 24, was just leaving his aunt’s house in Leas Avenue, Netherthong, when the massive piece of ice landed behind him.

It was just feet away and was also inches away from a van which was travelling up the road.

Now the puzzle is whether the ice fell from a plane or was caused by a fluke of nature.

Sam’s aunt, Mrs Alison Greaves, said: “It was very, very lucky that Sam wasn’t hurt.

“He had been here on Monday teatime and had just walked out of the garden into the road when he heard a noise and was shocked when this huge chunk of ice shattered on the road.

“It shattered into many pieces, but each of them was several inches thick.

“A van had just driven past and it could have hit that, or Sam, or possibly gone through the roof of our house.

“It was very lucky no-one was hurt.

“All the snow and ice we had around here has gone and it is a puzzle”.
