Work delayed but Railway Street ‘should open this week’

COLD weather has delayed work to repair a road that was re-laid as part of the St George’s Square revamp.
Railway Street has been closed since January 25 after damage to the surface caused two bus accidents.
Notices were put on the nearby bus stops on January 25 saying the road works would take “up to two weeks.”
Those signs have now been replaced by notices saying repairs could take as long as four weeks.
But Kirklees Council said the work should be done this week.
A spokeswoman said: “The cold weather has slowed down the work slightly as the concrete and mortar needs temperatures of above 4°C to set.
“There is some minor work still to do and Railway Street should be open by mid-week.”
The council blamed Wrekin Construction – the company behind the £4m revamp of the square – for the problems on Railway Street.
Two buses were damaged in accidents last month, including one which left seven people injured, after driving over a paving slab that had become dislodged.
