Headmaster Taylor Dyson’s books given proper home at Huddersfield University

AN IMPRESSIVE collection of history books amassed by a late Huddersfield headmaster has been donated to a university library.

The Old Almondburians’ Society, a group for alumni of King James’s School, Almondbury, has given Huddersfield University 550 books collected by the school’s former headmaster Taylor Dyson.

Mr Dyson, who led the school from 1913 to 1945, was a keen local historian and wrote four history books, two about Huddersfield.

Saddleworth-born Mr Dyson collected maps and books charting the history of Huddersfield, Britain and the world.

Mr Dyson moved to Christchurch, Dorset, after his retirement, where he died in 1957.

His collection was kept at King James’s Grammar School until 1953 when the school lost its grammar school status.

The books moved to Greenhead College where the majority remained untouched in storage.

Yesterday the collection was given pride of place in a dedicated part of the local history section of Huddersfield University Library.
