Conlon on crime: Purse thieves back again in Huddersfield town centre

PURSE dippers are thought to be preying on people again in Huddersfield town centre.

This type of offence seems to come and go, but there have been several recent reports of shoppers having their purses and wallets pinched from handbags.

On Monday there were three incidents in town.

In all three cases, women aged over 60, including one with a walking stick, were targeted by thieves who brushed passed them and took valuables from them in the process.

One incident happened on Brook Street, one in the Piazza and one on New Street.

One of the victims described the suspects as being two tall, slim Asian men, aged 20 to 30 and wearing dark coats.

Please be vigilant and take these steps to make sure you don’t become a victim: Don’t make it easy for thieves by leaving your handbag unzipped.

Wear your bag in front of you in your eye line so that you can see it.

Use a chain to attach any purses or wallets to the inside of your handbag.

Don’t carry too much cash and always keep wallets and purses in secure places rather than in your hand.

Don’t carry wallets, cash or mobile phones in your back pocket where they can be easily spotted and stolen by opportunistic thieves.
