Mr Ali believes the same culprits were responsible – but does not think the attacks are connected to his work as a councillor.

“We have lived here almost 20 years and we don’t have any problems with anyone,” he said.

“We never had any grudge against anyone and can’t see why anyone would want to do this.

“If they have a problem with any of us they should come and talk to us and sort it out.

“I think it’s the lowest of the low, issuing threats to my parents who are in their 70s. They don’t need this at this time in their lives.”

A police spokesman said extra patrols had been carried out in the area following the incident.

He added: “All we can do is appeal for further witnesses to come forward. Without further lines of inquiry, it is difficult to progress investigations.”
