Good craic at Huddersfield St Patrick’s Day Parade

WITH 10 colourful floats, 10 bands playing and 10 performers Huddersfield St Patrick’s Day Parade was bound to score a perfect 10.

Revellers lined the streets around the Market Place to watch the procession of colourful floats go by.

While entertainment this year included Irish dancers, majorettes, leprechauns, bands and musicians.

Event organiser John McLoughlin told the Examiner: “It was a brilliant, brilliant day and the weather was glorious.

“The sunshine brought out the colour of the festival.

“There was so much variety too. We had all the traditional Irish bands, but we also had brass bands and a samba band.

“The people in Market Square lapped it up and there were such huge crowds we were overwhelmed.”

Third generation Irish boy Eoin Jefferson, aged four, presented the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Julie Stewart-Turner, with a shamrock symbolising Ireland.

John said: “Eoin represents the Irish community in Huddersfield and the youth of the parade and we’d like to say thanks to the mayor.”

Mirfield couple Bill and Liz Thompson were among the crowd watching yesterday’s parade.

Bill said: “It’s great stuff – everything is very colourful and there’s lots of bands playing.”

Liz, who is originally from Cork, said it was important to have an event for the Irish in Huddersfield.
