Champions thumbs up for Huddersfield’s first indoor bowling green
IT’S a first for the town and will hopefully put bowling on the map in Huddersfield.
And the new indoor crown green bowling green has received the thumbs up from top players.
Kirklees Council has unveiled the all-weather facility at Leeds Road Sports Complex.
The top quality artificial pitch, which is covered by an inflatable 10.5m UPVC dome, is the only facility of its kind in Britain.
And the nearest covered green is 14 miles away in Penistone.
It is hoped bowlers will be able to use the facility all year round when the green officially opens on April 6.
Putting the green through its paces were county bowlers Steven Haigh and Jacquie Roper.
Steven, 46, plays for Yorkshire and Netherton Conservative Bowling Club. He is a former Yorkshire Merit winner and has won the Subscription Cup five times with Netherton.
Jacquie, 51, has captained Meltham Bowling Ladies who have held the Huddersfield League Ladies Title for five years.
Ms Roper also plays for Yorkshire Ladies.
Steven said: “It’s brilliant. It’s nice and airy and there’s a good atmosphere.
“If there are a few people in for a league match that would create its own unusual atmosphere.
