TWO men were arrested by police with taser guns last night after a man was discovered with stab wounds in the town centre.

Police swooped on the men, one aged in his 20s and another in his 30s, as they sat in a Red Audi car outside Nandos shortly after 5pm.

Although the taser was not used, witnesses say police pointed the guns at the men and shouted for them to fall to their knees. They were then arrested and taken away.

Just minutes earlier the man with stab wounds, also aged in his early 20s, had appealed to pub-goers outside the Head of Steam on St George’s Square to help him. Witnesses said there was a lot of blood on his jacket.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment. Last night his condition was not thought to be life-threatening.

Witnesses described seeing the incident on John William Street unfold.

The two men were sitting in a red Audi parked next to the cash machine outside Nandos.

At 5.09pm police shouted at the two men to get out of their car, which they then did.

Chris Collins, of Deighton, was outside Wetherspoons when it happened and said: “I saw police surround the car, there were two cops close by and about six others a few feet back.

“I heard someone shout ‘taser’ but no-one was shot.

“There was a red light on one of their faces (from the taser) but it was all over in a few minutes.”

Police cordoned off an alleyway at Byram Court off John William Street as well as part of Station Street. Officers stood guard there late into last night.

Another witness, Sharron Harding, 27, added: “The police taped the whole area off pretty quickly, they were looking up the alleyway (at Byram Court) for ages.

“It’s pretty scary stuff seeing police with guns, but it was all over really quickly.”

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We were called at 5.09pm to reports that a man in his 20s with stab wounds had entered a pub on St George’s Square asking for help.

“When we arrived officers had been made aware by a witness that the suspects were believed to have headed towards a red car on John William Street.

“Subsequently, we arrested two men, one aged in his 20s and another in his 30s, on suspicion of assault.

“They will be questioned over the weekend.”
