PUBLIC sector staff in Huddersfield who have had enforced time off because of the Iceland volcano will not be paid.

As reported yesterday, teachers are being told they must make up time they have missed while stranded abroad.

Union the NUT say it would take legal action if any members lost earnings.

But today it has been revealed similar policies apply to all Kirklees Council workers, police and NHS staff.

A council spokeswoman said: “We will be working with employees to look at flexible ways of dealing with the situation, such as using a mix of annual leave, flexible working and working on non-work days if part-time, to make up the lost time.

“For some, an element of unpaid leave might be required if this solution isn’t available. This will apply to all those whose trips abroad over-ran.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman added: “Staff have been asked to book further annual leave to cover their absence and, where appropriate, we have allowed the use of rest days, time off in lieu of overtime or flexi-leave.

“If any staff have been seriously affected and left with issues surrounding their future working time and leave arrangements, the force will be considering a level of flexibility in policies and procedures.”

A spokesman for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust said: “Where staff have been affected we would rely on the discretion of our managers to deal with any issues arising.

“Staff affected should take annual leave or use time accrued or – if these options are not available to them – they can take unpaid leave. This is the same as our adverse weather policy which was agreed with our trade unions.”
