“We had donations from nearly every single continent in the world. It really was amazing the amount of global support for such a small, local charity.”
Mrs Salmon said the event would be a big boost to the trust.
“We are proud to have a friend like Dan – he’s done so much for the trust, both financially and with general awareness.
“We wish him and his teams of walkers all the very best in July, and would like to say a heartfelt thank-you to them all.”
The walkers will be split into three teams.
An international team of 36, from England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, and the USA will walk east to west across the country.
Twelve more walkers will walk the other way and another 12 will cycle the parallel Hadrian’s Wall bike path.
The group, who are sponsored by sports headwear company Buff, hope to raise more than £20,000.
