600 mile trek for punters of the George Inn, Kirkburton
BIKERS are hoping for a roaring success on a 600-mile ride.
Regulars from the George Inn in Kirkburton are on their way to John O’Groats from Lands End and they stopped off at the pub mid-way through their trip.
Driving old cars or motorbikes, the participants are raising money for the Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust, a project to transform a boat into a floating clinic.
Among those taking part are Chris Barrow, Steve Rogers, Ian Barrett, Chay Rogers, Steve Letch and Mark Finch.
Ian Barratt, who is completing the ride on a truck, said: “This is a project to renovate the Chauncy Maples, the oldest ship in Africa, which will, with our help, be refitted as a floating clinic in a country where there is on average only one doctor for every 52,000 people.”
Ian’s neighbour Chay Rogers is competing the challenge in a Morris Traveller.
Steve Rogers, who grew up in Malawi, said: “We have decided that we will support this work not least because I grew up in Malawi and know the ship and the people.”
