COMEDIANS are paid to make people laugh and audiences pay to be entertained.

Last night all that was turned on its head when comedian Jason Manford gave every member of his Lawrence Batley Theatre audience a fiver.

There were 458 people in the main house so the gag gig cost Jason £2,290.

Ranjit Rehill, the theatre’s press officer was one of the people handing out crisp notes to people as they took their seats.

"It was a very confusing night in the theatre. But the whole idea gave the place a buzz," she said.

"The audience was slightly confused. There was one group with six people in it and they went into the show clutching £30.

"Some people were slightly concerned because they obviously wondered what they had to do to earn £5."

All they had to do it seems is laugh in all the right places.

"The show is on its way to Edinburgh to the festival," said Ranjit.

"As we understand it, Jason just wanted to make sure that since the show is still being developed, people got their money’s worth."

Tickets were £14 and £12 so with a fiver in hand, the audience went home laughing.
