INVESTIGATIONS into the cause of the Grosvenor Chemicals fire are continuing.

After a huge firefighting operation that involved as many as 150 firefighters and 25 fire engines at its height, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s substantially reduced its operation yesterday.

There were three fire engines at the plant as the deep-seated fire continued to smoulder but was kept well under control.

Crews were expected to be on standby again today.

While workers were at the factory helping with the clean-up, access to the site was restricted yesterday.

But the extent of the damage to buildings was visible from the hillside overlooking the Linthwaite plant.

A large warehouse that was used to contain raw materials had collapsed after being ravaged by the blaze.

Neighbouring warehouse buildings had also suffered significant damage.

The only other major damage was to a utilities building.

The Health and Safety Executive and fire investigation officers remained on-site yesterday to carry out investigations.

They were expected to be at the factory for several days.
