A SCHOOL in Huddersfield has won an award for building excellence.

Hillside Primary School at Newsome and building firm Morgan Ashurst were the winners in the education category of the 2010 Yorkshire Building Excellence awards.

And a new house built at Ash Croft, Farnley Tyas, by Holmfirth-based A E Haywood & Sons Ltd won the prize for the best new single dwelling.

The awards were announced at a prestigious black tie event in Leeds organised by the five local authority building control services at Kirklees, Calderdale, Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford councils.

Clr Peter McBride, Kirklees cabinet member for regeneration, said he was delighted that two local buildings have won awards.

He said: “I am particularly pleased that Hillside school received recognition for its design.

“The school also won the award for best school installation at the 2010 Yorkshire and Humber Microgeneration AwardsŠearlier this year.”

The new £7.4m school, which opened in November last year, includes features such as solar panels, a wind turbine and a system to recycle water.
